City of Caledonia
"A City for All Seasons"
History and Nature - Year Round
The best of history, recreation, and nature abound year-round in Caledonia, the county seat of Houston. At the county fairgrounds is a collection of historic buildings, including a cabin, town hall, school, and church, all saved from destruction and moved to the site. In town, there is the National Register-listed Caledonia Commercial Historic District on East Main Street and South Kingston; the old jail, constructed in 1875; and the Court House, built in 1883. Each December, Caledonia is host to the Bluff and Valley Balloon Rally, where balloonists brave the elements for a scenic and “Uplifting” ride. Surrounding Caledonia are fine opportunities for wild turkey hunting, and in Beaver Creek Valley State Park, hiking and camping. Caledonia is also the birthplace of David Kunst, the first man to circle the globe on foot.
