About Us

The purpose of Historic Bluff Country is to establish Southeastern Minnesota as a desirable vacation destination, which will help to strengthen and improve the economic base of the area.

The region offers visitors scenic beauty, outdoor fun, historic sites, cave exploration, cultural diversity and activities, interesting shopping, wonderful food and festivals, and welcome relaxation. Working together as a region, we can enhance the opportunities and increase the number of visitors.

Southeastern Minnesota Historic Bluff Country is a Convention and Visitors Bureau that was incorporated in 1985. It is a regional association comprised of communities, businesses, individuals, and organizations working together to promote tourism and related activities in Southeastern Minnesota. Our geographic area lies south of Interstate 90 to the State of Iowa, and east of Highway 56 to the Mississippi River, including Fillmore and Houston Counties as well as parts of Mower, Olmsted, and Winona Counties.

The organization is directed by innovative and ambitious volunteer members. Historic Bluff Country staff will be happy to assist you with lodging referrals and share information that will encourage a delightful adventure to discover the magic in Southeastern Minnesota.

Promotional Activities -- The Back Roads and Bluff Country Magic brochure is the primary printed marketing vehicle, listing attractions, lodging, dining, shopping, and sightseeing opportunities throughout the Bluff Country area, with 50,000 copies distributed each year. The brochure also includes an annual listing of festivals and events in the region. The Back Roads is the response piece for all inquiries and is distributed at the Minnesota State Fair, at travel shows, through all twelve state travel information centers, at local visitor centers, at member convention and visitor bureaus, and Chambers of Commerce, along interstate 94/90 in Wisconsin and in various other places.

The Historic Bluff Country web site (www.bluffcountry.com) makes  information about Southeastern Minnesota and our members available world wide.

Cooperative advertising allows members to promote individual businesses at a much lower cost than would otherwise be possible. It also allows visitors to easily identify regional opportunities and extend their stay in the area.

Other promotional activities include the following:

  • Manage Historic Bluff Country National Scenic Byway Corridor
  • Providing an exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair
  • Organizing opportunities for cooperative exhibits at travel shows
  • Assisting with planning of events to benefit the region, such as:
    • Bluff  Country Studio Tour in April
    • Scenic Byway Celebration in May
    • Non Biker Trail Ride in September
  • Planning group tours for travel agents
  • Distributing brochures from member communities and businesses

Opportunities for Involvement -- Members of Historic Bluff Country contribute to the organization through their membership fees, committee work, and volunteer activities. Seven members are elected to the Board of Directors to oversee the business of the organization.

Active committees provide opportunities for members to share their knowledge and expertise and contribute to the direction of the organization. Committees include Advertising/Marketing, Travel Shows, Membership, Group Tour, Internet, Scenic ByWays, and Public Image.

Your partnership with Historic Bluff Country presents opportunities for you to be involved in promoting Southeastern Minnesota as a desirable vacation destination
